Visible grapheme clusters answer the practical question: how many symbols does a person perceive? Unicode code points reveal the encoded characters that form those symbols. UTF-16 units match JavaScript string length and many software interfaces, while UTF-8 bytes are useful for storage, APIs and byte-limited fields.
The Unicode inspector shows the first visible clusters with their code points, UTF-16 length, byte size and type. It also flags selected standalone zero-width or directional formatting characters that can create confusing counts or hidden text behaviour.
SMS Character and Segment Calculator
SMS length depends on encoding. A common GSM-7 message can usually hold 160 basic units in one segment, while extension-table symbols use two units. A character outside the GSM set commonly changes the message to Unicode, reducing the usual single-segment capacity to 70 UTF-16 units. Concatenated messages have smaller per-segment capacities because segmentation metadata uses space.

Does the Character Counter upload or save my text?
No. Counting, previews, imports and exports run in the active browser tab. Your text is not sent to a character-analysis API, stored in a database or included in analytics events.
Why can one emoji count as several code points?
A visible emoji can contain a base symbol, skin-tone modifier, variation selector or zero-width joiners. The tool therefore reports user-perceived graphemes, Unicode code points, UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes separately.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
The visible total includes spaces and line breaks. The without-whitespace figure removes Unicode whitespace before counting visible grapheme clusters.
Is the SMS segment count exact for every carrier?
It is a planning estimate based on common GSM-7 and Unicode capacities. Carrier gateways, national language tables and message metadata can change the final segmentation.
Does the tool count Urdu, Arabic, Chinese and emoji?
Yes. It uses Intl.Segmenter where available and a Unicode-aware fallback. The different count models help when a platform or database uses a different technical definition of character.
Are the social-media and SEO limits guaranteed?
No. Platform rules can change, and search snippets are influenced by pixel width and query context. Every preset is editable and should be verified in the final publishing interface.
What does Trim safely to limit do?
It removes complete grapheme clusters from the end until the selected counting model fits. It does not cut through a joined emoji or combining-character sequence.
