How to Compress a PDF Online

Choose the Right PDF Compression Engine

PDF compression is not one single operation. A text report, a scanned application and a photo brochure contain different data and need different treatment. This tool therefore separates lossless structural rewriting, hybrid page handling and full raster compression instead of hiding every tradeoff behind one button.

Lossless Rewrite is the safest first test for text-heavy files, although its reduction may be small. Hybrid Auto copies text-heavy pages and rebuilds scan-heavy pages as compressed images. Full Raster normally creates the smallest image-based copy, but searchable text, links, forms, accessibility tags and vector detail do not survive.

Ten Professional Compression Profiles

The template gallery is a set of real compression configurations rather than decorative themes. Smart Balanced, Text and Forms Safe, Scanned Document, Email Under 10 MB, Upload Under 5 MB, Portal Under 2 MB, Photo Brochure, Archive Preview Copy, Mobile Scan Extreme and Custom Expert each load different engine, DPI, quality, colour and cleanup settings.

Upload-limit profiles are targets, not guarantees. A PDF made mostly of compact text may not shrink much, while a camera-scan PDF can often shrink substantially. The result card reports whether the requested target was met.

Page Analysis Before Compression

The browser inspects each page for extractable text, image-painting operations, annotations and likely blank content. Pages are labelled text, scan, image, mixed or blank and displayed as thumbnails before compression begins.

The classification is intentionally visible and editable. In Hybrid Auto, users can preserve a page that contains important selectable text or force rasterization for a large scan page. Likely blank-page removal remains optional because automatic blank detection can never understand every faint stamp or handwritten mark.

DPI, JPEG Quality and Colour Modes

DPI controls the pixel dimensions of pages that are rasterized. Lower values reduce memory and file size; higher values retain more detail. JPEG quality controls compression artifacts separately from resolution. Small text should be checked in the before-and-after preview before an aggressive setting is accepted.

Grayscale can reduce colour scan size, while black-and-white threshold output can be useful for simple forms. These settings only affect rasterized pages. Copied pages in Lossless Rewrite or Hybrid mode retain their original PDF content.

Target File Size Without False Guarantees

When a target is selected, full-raster output can retry locally with reduced resolution and quality up to three times. Hybrid mode can optionally fall back to full raster when copied pages keep the result above the target.

The tool does not claim that every document can fit 1 MB, 2 MB, 5 MB or 10 MB while remaining readable. Very long documents and detailed plans may need a larger limit, page splitting or a dedicated desktop optimizer.

Searchable Text, Links, Forms and Signatures

Lossless Rewrite generally keeps searchable page content. Hybrid preserves it only on copied pages. Full Raster creates image-only pages. Form flattening can preserve the visible appearance of supported fields but removes editability.

Any rewrite can invalidate a digital signature because the signed byte structure changes. The original signed PDF should always be retained. This tool does not certify signatures, preserve encryption or validate legal document integrity.

Batch Compression and Local ZIP

Multiple PDFs can be analyzed and compressed in one browser session. Each result has its own exact source size, output size, reduction percentage, engine and preservation note.

Results can be downloaded individually or packaged into a ZIP generated locally in the browser. The tool does not create an online file history; closing the tab removes loaded documents and generated object URLs.

Private Browser Processing

PDF content, passwords and filenames stay in the current browser tab and are not uploaded or saved by the website. General tool actions may be counted for analytics, but document names and contents are not included.

Local processing also means device limits matter. Large image-heavy PDFs at high DPI can use substantial memory, especially on mobile. Smaller batches, lower DPI and the screen or balanced profiles are safer on limited devices.

This browser implementation cannot perform every optimization available in a commercial desktop PDF engine, such as deep object deduplication, font subsetting across every font type, advanced image-stream transcoding or certified PDF/A optimization.

The tool is designed to give transparent, useful local options rather than claim impossible lossless reductions. Always inspect the downloaded file, verify small text and keep the original document.

Verified Preservation Matrix for the Three Engines

The preservation labels are derived from the actual output paths in this module. Lossless Rewrite saves the existing PDF structure through PDF-lib. Hybrid Auto copies selected pages and rebuilds other pages as JPEG-backed PDF pages. Full Raster rebuilds every included page from a rendered bitmap.

These implementation checks establish what each path is designed to keep or discard. A specific document can still contain unsupported fonts, annotations, forms, encryption or signatures, so the downloaded result must be opened and tested against the original before submission.
