How to Split a PDF Online

How PDF Splitting and Page Preservation Work

Split PDF is designed around the real reasons users divide a document: extracting a few pages, making one file per page, creating fixed-size chapters, following visible divider points, using bookmarks, meeting upload limits or repairing scans.

Original PDF pages are copied into new PDF documents whenever possible, so splitting does not intentionally reduce image resolution. The two-up page-halves mode embeds cropped halves into new page sizes and therefore has a different preservation profile.

Source files, passwords, thumbnails, split plans, output PDFs and ZIP archives stay in the current browser tab and are not uploaded or automatically saved by the website.

Split PDFs Visually, Not Blindly

A page range box is useful, but important documents need visual confirmation. The workspace renders real page thumbnails, lets you select or exclude pages, shows rotation and creates a live plan before any output is generated.

This reduces mistakes such as extracting the wrong certificate, omitting a signed page or splitting a chapter one page too early.

Nine Ways to Divide a PDF

Choose selected pages into one PDF, every page separately, every N pages, custom groups, cut points, odd/even sets, top-level bookmarks, approximate target size or two-up page halves.

These workflows answer different intents. Extracting three pages is not the same task as creating 100 single-page files, splitting a book by bookmarks or meeting a five-megabyte portal limit.

Professional Split PDF Templates

Ten original workflow templates configure real settings rather than displaying decorative mockups. Templates cover selected pages, every-page extraction, two-page chunks, custom chapters, divider points, odd/even scan sets, bookmark chapters, email-size parts, two-up scans and a custom batch planner.

After selecting a template, every setting remains editable and the loaded PDF pages remain in place.

Page Ranges, Cut Points and Custom Groups

Use a page range such as 1-5,8,11-13 to select pages. For multiple output groups, enter 1-3 | 4-7 | 8,10-12. For divider points, enter 3,7 to create pages 1-3, 4-7 and the remaining pages.

The live split plan lists the page range and proposed filename for every output before generation.

Split PDF by Bookmarks

Reports, books and manuals sometimes include a PDF outline. When readable top-level bookmarks are present, the tool can use their starting pages as chapter boundaries and place bookmark names in filenames.

Not every PDF contains usable bookmarks, and copied outputs do not automatically rebuild the full interactive outline tree.

Approximate Target-Size Splitting

Target-size mode is useful for email and upload portals. The browser builds candidate PDF groups and checks their saved sizes before finalizing each part.

The target is best effort because fonts, images and other resources may be shared across pages. A single large page can also exceed the chosen target by itself.

Odd, Even and Two-Up Scan Workflows

Odd/even mode creates two PDF sets for front/back scan repair. Two-up halves mode divides each selected sheet into left/right or top/bottom pages for book scans and oversized two-page layouts.

Page-halves mode changes page geometry and should be reviewed carefully, especially when the source contains interactive forms, annotations or unusual rotations.

Clear Filenames and ZIP Downloads

Build output names with tokens for the source file, part number, first page, last page, page range or bookmark. Padding keeps large batches sorted correctly.

Every result can be downloaded separately, or all PDFs can be packaged into one ZIP generated inside the browser.

Split PDF versus Extract, Merge and Convert

Split PDF produces several PDF outputs from source documents. Merge PDF creates one combined packet, PDF to JPG creates image files, JPG to PDF starts from images and PDF Compressor reduces file size.

Use Extract Pages to create one PDF from selected pages. Use Split PDF when you need multiple files, ranges, bookmarks or size-based splitting.

Private Browser Processing and Limits

PDF files, passwords, thumbnails and results stay in the current browser tab and are not uploaded or automatically saved by the website.

Splitting rewrites a PDF and normally invalidates digital signatures. Very large, damaged or strongly encrypted documents can also exceed browser or library capabilities.

Extract PDF Pages and Separate PDF Pages

Output, Preservation and Browser Limits

• Target-size splitting is best effort because PDF resources and shared fonts do not divide evenly by page.
• PDF bookmarks can define chapter boundaries only when the browser can read a usable outline.
• Existing digital signatures should be considered invalid after any split or rewrite.
• Interactive forms, links, annotations and bookmarks may not survive every PDF structure; inspect final outputs.
• The two-up halves mode changes page geometry and may not preserve every interactive page feature.
• Very large or encrypted PDFs may be limited by browser memory and PDF-library support.
